Wave understands natural language — you don't have to memorize verbs. But seeing the patterns helps. This page is a cheat sheet for the most common chat operations.

## Room operations

| Action | Example phrasing |
| --- | --- |
| Add a room | *"Add the laundry room"* / *"I missed an area — can we add a coat closet?"* |
| Rename via chat | *"Rename the hall bath to 'powder room'"* (right-pane click is usually faster) |

[Adding a room](/docs/estimates/add-room) only works through chat. [Renaming](/docs/estimates/rename-room) is faster in the right pane.

## Line-item edits

| Action | Example phrasing |
| --- | --- |
| Rename | *"Rename the air mover line in the hall bathroom to 'air mover — 24-hour run'"* |
| Change quantity | *"Bump the dehus in the hall bath to 2"* / *"Set the air mover qty in the hallway to 3"* |
| Adjust price | *"Add 10% to the antimicrobial in the hall bath"* / *"Set floor protection to $45/LF"* |
| Add | *"Add a baseboard repair line to the hallway, 8 LF"* |
| Delete | *"Delete the cover register from the hall bathroom"* |
| Add a note | *"Add a note to the antimicrobial: 'product on file with the carrier'"* |
| Apply a modifier | *"Apply After Hours to the service call line"* / *"Add Category 3 to the antimicrobial in the hall bath"* |
| Remove a modifier | *"Remove the No Bagging modifier from the demo line in the hallway"* |

> **Room-specification rule.** When the line item is room-scoped (which is most of them), name the room in the command. The General section is an exception — see [Edit a line item via chat](/docs/estimates/edit-line-item-via-chat).

## FNOL and estimate-level edits

| Action | Example phrasing |
| --- | --- |
| Set FNOL field | *"Set the claim number to 24-A-78812"* / *"Adjuster email is sjohnson@statefarm.example"* |
| Change category | *"Change the category to Cat 3"* (you can also use the FNOL dropdown) |
| Update Loss Description | *"Update the loss description to '…'"* |
| Add to estimate notes | *"Add to estimate notes: '50% deposit required to start'"* |

## Multi-edit in one message

Wave handles chained commands. Issue them as one message and they apply in order:

> *"Delete the floor protection in the hallway, bump the dehu count to 2 in the hall bath, and add a note to the antimicrobial that says 'approved by adjuster on 5/12.'"*

## When chat is the only path

- **Adding a room** — chat only. See [Add a room mid-estimate](/docs/estimates/add-room).

## When the right pane is faster

- **Inline math in QTY** — *"8*3"* with live `= 24.0` preview is faster than describing it
- **Reordering** — drag-and-drop in the right pane
- **Renaming a single room** — click the room name
- **Modifiers** — the kebab → Modify ▸ submenu shows you which modifiers are available, applied, and greyed out at a glance. Chat works fine, but you may not know whether a modifier even applies to that line type until Wave tells you. See [Modify a line item](/docs/estimates/modify-line-item).
