What a flood cut actually is
A flood cut is a horizontal cut across the wall that removes the bottom band of gypsum, exposing the bottom plate, the studs, and any insulation in the cavity. It is the alternative to drying the wall in place with weep holes or a cavity drying system.

Map the moisture before the saw comes out
Sweep the wall with a non-penetrating meter to find where the wet zone ends, then confirm the boundary with a penetrating meter just above the intended cut line. Cutting at the waterline leaves wicked moisture in the remaining sheet, and gypsum wicks well past the visible tide line.
Why 2 feet is the common default
Two feet clears the wicking on most Category 1 losses caught within a day or two, and it sits above standard receptacle box height, so the removed band contains the boxes. Cutting around outlets and cleaning the top edge is why the flood cut labor rate runs higher per unit than a plain sheet pull.
Why 4 feet shows up so often
Drywall comes 4 feet wide, so a 4 foot cut takes a full sheet width on the repair with no ripping. Four feet is also the answer when the water stood higher, when the cavity holds saturated batt insulation, or when readings above the 2 foot line will not come down.
When the wall comes out floor to ceiling

The repair side is where money gets left behind
