Edit a line item via chat

Tell Wave what to change in plain words and watch the estimate update. Rename lines, change quantities and prices, add items or take them off, even chain several changes in one message.

Tell Wave what to change in plain words and watch the estimate update. Rename lines, change quantities and prices, add items or take them off, even chain several changes in one message. Most changes you make on the estimate, you can make by telling Wave, which is handy when you have several to do or you'd rather describe what you want than click around.

Where to type

Open the job and go to its Estimates tab. Type your change in the Wave chat beside the estimate. On a phone, tap Chat above the estimate, or pick Chat from the job's view menu.

If the job has more than one estimate and it isn't clear which one you mean, Wave asks "Which estimate is this about?" before it changes anything.

What chat edits can do

  • Rename: "Rename the air mover line in the hall bathroom to 'air mover, 24-hour run'."
  • Quantity: "Bump the dehu count in the hallway to 2."
  • Price: "Set the floor protection to $45 per LF."
  • Add a line item: "Add a baseboard repair line to the hallway, 8 LF."
  • Take a line item off: "Take the cover register off the hall bathroom."
  • Add a note: "Add a note on the containment line."
  • Several at once: chain them in one message and Wave works through the list.

Overhead and profit lines are calculated by Wave and update when the estimate changes. See Overhead & Profit and minimum charges.

Name the room

Tip: when you change a line item inside a specific room, name the room in your message. Most line items belong to a room, and naming it saves a clarifying question when more than one room has a similar item, like a "cover register."

What to expect while Wave works

  • Wave works on one message at a time. While it works, the send button turns into Stop. Press it to cancel.
  • The estimate pauses while Wave updates it, so its edits and yours stay in sync. A note on the estimate tells you changes are paused, and editing opens up again as soon as Wave finishes.
  • Changes appear live on the estimate as Wave makes them.

Your hand edits stick

If you set a quantity or price by hand, Wave keeps it when it updates the estimate later. See Edit a line item manually.

Free trial and paid plans

Paid plans have no cap on follow-up chat messages. On the free trial, once Wave finishes an estimate, follow-up chat messages on that estimate are limited, and editing by hand is unlimited. See The free trial.

Chat edits and undo

Undo covers changes Wave makes and changes you make by hand. Press ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z) on the estimate, or on desktop use the Undo and Redo arrows in the job header. If an arrow isn't ready to step back, click it to see why.

On a job with a drying log, if an undo changes drying equipment or room sizes, Wave asks whether to Update the drying log or Keep it as it is.

  • Chat for batch changes, or when you're already in the conversation.
