Mold and asbestos estimates

Tell Wave what was found and tested, and it builds a full mold remediation or asbestos abatement estimate priced for the loss address, with your test results driving the scope.

Last updated

Wave builds mold remediation and asbestos abatement estimates the same way it builds water estimates: tell it about the job, answer its questions, and get a full estimate priced for the loss address that you can review and adjust. Mold and asbestos are each their own kind of estimate, so they can sit on a job next to its water or repairs estimate.

Start a mold or asbestos estimate

  1. On Home, type or dictate into the command box, for example "mold estimate for Jordan Park at 482 Sycamore". Or open the job and tell Wave in the chat beside it.
  2. Name the work in plain words. "Mold remediation", "asbestos abatement" or "ACM (asbestos-containing material) removal" is enough. Wave picks the kind from your words and asks when they leave it open.
  3. Answer Wave's questions. Wave asks one at a time and uses what your job notes already say.
  4. Wave builds the estimate on the job's Estimates tab and states any assumption it made, so you can correct it.

Tell Wave what was found and tested

The more you say up front, the fewer questions Wave asks. Cover where the damage is, which rooms are affected and what's coming out.

On an asbestos job, also tell Wave:

  • Which materials tested positive, or which ones you're treating as asbestos without a result yet. Have your test results handy when you start.
  • Which materials tested negative, so Wave bills them as ordinary work.
  • Whether the structure is being dried too, or the job is abatement only. Drying goes on the estimate when it's part of the job.

Hazardous-waste hauling and disposal is custom-priced. Give Wave your number and it goes on the estimate. Until then, Wave leaves disposal off and notes on the estimate that it isn't included.

If you have a lab report or a consultant's report, attach the PDF in chat. Wave tells you what the report says and names the report as its source.

Materials Wave bills

Wave bills the materials you name. When a line depends on a finding, such as an asbestos-positive material, the finding comes from you, and Wave asks if it's missing.

Wave also includes the work that normally comes with the scope you describe. Review the estimate, delete any line that doesn't apply, and add anything missing by telling Wave or by hand. Your manual edits are kept.

Photos: Wave describes, you decide

Attach photos in chat and ask about them. Wave describes what it can see, compares it with the estimate, and offers changes for you to approve.

Wave describes what is visible in the photo. Material identification, occupancy and health calls stay with you and your professionals. When those questions are open, Wave points you to qualified testing, a qualified professional or the local authority.

Chat about the standards while you build

Wave is familiar with the industry standards for mold remediation and water damage from field experience, credible sources and the EPA. Ask about mold, drying science or a general question, and chat about the standards based on those sources. Wave points you to the source it relies on, so you can back up your estimate as you build it. Industry standards chat comes with Basic and above, and with the free trial. See Coverage and industry standards questions.

Drying on mold and asbestos jobs

A mold estimate includes drying the structure. An asbestos estimate includes it when drying is part of the job. When drying is on the estimate, the job's drying log works the same way it does on a water job, on plans that include drying logs. Wave generates sample dry logs based on what real drying science would be, to help anyone on your team who is new to drying understand drying goals for the job. Already have a drying log? Attach it in a chat from Home or in a job's chat, and Wave reads it, answers questions about it and records any readings you tell it. Spot-check readings on site.

Several estimates on one job

Each estimate covers one kind of work. When an estimate finishes, Wave may offer the next estimate the loss usually needs. Tap the offer, for example Start the Repairs estimate, and Wave starts it right away and tells you it used one estimate credit. You can also ask Wave for any other kind of estimate on the job.

Each new estimate uses one estimate credit. Duplicating uses no credit and is available on paid plans.
